CURRENT STUDENT OF THE SEMESTER

Congratulations to Marissa Deslatte of Texas State University-San Marcos for being selected as the Austin Ad Federation “Student of the Semester” of Spring 2010. 

  

Marissa Deslatte

Marissa graduated from Texas State University in May, 2010 with a degree in Advertising from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. She served as VP of finance for the Texas State Ad Club where she increased their discretionary funds by $1,500 within two semesters. She also worked as a volunteer for the Austin Ad Fed ADDY and Big Wig Award shows.

Marissa had four internships during her academic career at Texas State, two of which were in media: Trier Media-Miami Beach, Florida and The Davis Group in Austin, Texas where she performed research analysis developed broadcast buys and contacted vendors and reps for rates. She also worked as a marketing coordinator assistant for Texas Monthly Magazine in Austin and as Event Coordinator for Organizing for America where she organized political events, phone banks, and data entry.

Marissa was the recipient of many honors at Texas State. She won 1st place in name tag design at the Houston Ad Federation competition and 1st place for her media plan in Mass Communication 3372 (media course). She was chosen as one of 20 students from among 50 applicants to be a member of the 2010 Texas State American Advertising Federation Student Competition team where she became a member of the media team. The AAF team won 1st place at District 10 (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana) competition and 2nd place at national competition from among 18 other district winners. The media team also won Best Media Plan at district competition. Marissa was chosen by the faculty advisors and her peers to be one of five presenters on the Texas State AAF team.

STUDENT OF THE SEMESTER CRITERIA AND NOMINATION FORM

I. Objective

The Austin Ad Fed “Student of the Semester” is designed to recognize and promote academically talented students from advertising-related disciplines.


II. Eligibility

A. Students must have GPA of at least 3.0 in their major.
B. Students must be undergraduates who are members of an AAF Student Chapter and who have completed at least one semester of college.
C. Students must be majoring or minoring in:   

- Advertising - Marketing
- Commercial Design/Art   - Photography
- Communications - Public Relations
- Journalism - Radio/Television/Film
 

III. Nomination Requirements

A. Students can be nominated by a faculty member/advisor, student club, or may self nominate.
B. Complete the Austin Advertising Federation Nomination Form.
C. Attach a copy of your college/university transcript to the nomination.
D. Provide evidence of work/achievements as evidenced by:
     1. resume, highlighting work experience and accomplishments
     2. letter(s) of recommendation from a faculty member, internship director, or student club
     3. examples of work (this can take the form of creative work or class assignments/projects)
     4. leadership positions in extracurricular activities such as student clubs
     5. internships


IV. Selection Process

Students are chosen by a sub-committee of the Austin Advertising Federation Board of Directors.  Selection is based on a scoring system of the above nomination requirements, documentation/examples of work, and the overall presentation of materials. The student selected receives a one-year membership to the Austin Ad Federation.


V. Deadline

5:00 p.m., April 19, 2010 for the spring semester and November 5, 2010 for the fall semester.
