Austin Ad Fed - Just Ad People
Let the Ritual Begin: The ADDYs

The ADDYs are upon us. Hidden within the grand ritual of ADDY glitz, glamour, and garish self-promotion lies an exceptional professional development opportunity. Entering the ADDYs forces you to take a long hard look at your work. It can be a humbling experience.

It can also be an inspiring one. It can help you commit to digging deeper, thinking harder, and forcing yourself to look for new perspectives in the year to come.

Entering the ADDYs can also beef up your book and heal your karma–in this fundamentally hyperbolic industry–by leading you to work on pro-bono campaigns. We all know the creative freedom that comes with pro-bono work. ADDY judges respond to bold, innovative concepts and design. Pro-bono work affords you that opportunity. Last year I contributed to public service campaigns that won three Austin and three District ADDYs. Who says pro-bono doesn't pay?

Our public service clients include the SIMS Foundation, Hill Country Ride for AIDS and Art From the Streets. This year's AFTS campaign contributed to a 30% growth in revenue, to $80,668. That growth meant a lot to the 100 homeless artists who sold work, and to the two dozen volunteers who worked on the campaign.

Want to help? Want to add innovative work to your portfolio–and next year's ADDYs? Visit www.austinadfed.com, click the Get Involved button, select a project and tell us your skills and interests. We'll put you to work.

It's a nice ritual, doing good. And winning an ADDY makes it that much nicer. We'll see you at ADDY Call for Entries on Friday, UT College of Communications Lobby, 3 to 7 PM.

MEMBER NEWS

The appearance of an oompah band, complete with lederhosen heralded the announcement that GSD&M had landed the prestigious BMW account. After a grueling four month pitch, BMW executives clandestinely flew into Austin to deliver the news in person. The agency had been told to expect a phone call. Instead they got the band, the executives and a load of beer and pretzels. GSD&M will handle national branding duties in traditional and non-traditional media. A week after awarding the creative duties to GSD&M, BMW also awarded media planning and buying, which was not part of the original RFP.

KGSR Taps SIMS to Receive Proceeds from new "Broadcasts" CD. KGSR will release its Broadcasts, Vol. 13 CD this November with proceeds benefiting the SIMS Foundation. This year's CD premieres 21 artists who have never been on a KGSR broadcasts CD before, including Mavis Staples, Natalie Maines, the Neville Brothers, John Butler Trio, Arlo Guthrie, Jack Johnson, the Greencards, Aqualung and others.

ADDY Judges Search Austin for Creative Brilliance

Maja Sommerlatte, St. Edwards University graduate, English Writing
Scott Van Osdol, Ad Fed President

Each and every day the 2005 ADDY judges encounter compelling design, bold concepts and fresh-picked ideas. It comes with the job, working in some of the nation's leading ad agencies and schools.

In early January, the judges will cut short their holidays and come to Austin–to judge us. Before that we hope you'll visit their websites, view their work, and come away inspired–and only a little daunted–by their talent, experience, and passion. The ADDY team dug deep to find marquee-name judges capable of evaluating your best work. We hope you'll rise to the challenge and enter early and often. And earn the recognition you so richly deserve.

The Judges

Kevin Roddy - Executive Creative Director of Bartle, Bogle & Hegarty, New York City. "When the world zigs, zag."

I look for clear strategic insight, executed flawlessly, and brought to life in a big, fresh creative idea. I look for advertising that defines itself, rather than being defined by something else that's been done before. And I look for ideas that lend themselves to creative breadth.

Carolyn McGeorge - Creative Director of RightMinds, Richmond, VA. "You can do anything when you put our minds to it."

Although I've never been to Austin, its reputation is a good one. Its advertising continues to show up in the national books. GSDM comes to mind as well as a few other smaller competitors that do good work. I look forward to seeing this first hand. I plan to come early to see one of my best friends in the world. I'm sure she'll be able to show me some sights. Then just to mingle with great folks to come back inspired will make the trip complete.

Luis Pena - PenaBrand, San Francisco. "Loving Design and the world around it since 1995."

I'm really curious to learn more about the smaller shops. I don't really have an agenda or a certain type of piece that I'm looking for, but since I am a designer I do appreciate smart visual solutions. I would also love to see work that is experimental in nature, pushing the boundaries in either medium or concept. As for my trip there, I can't wait to see a show at Emos and Joe's Generic Bar, eat at La Fogata, go buy some alt country CDs at Waterloo, and walk the trails at Barton Springs.

Hank Richardson - President of Atlanta's Portfolio Center "The creation, re-creation, and maintenance of brands is at the core of design and advertising."

I'd like to see evidence that we're returning to the basic tenets of advertising and brand stewardship–back to Lois's Big Idea, the belief that consumers are real human beings who are smart and should not be talked down to, and that advertising must connect with them as individuals–find out their likes and dislikes, discover what they really need, and communicate in a genuinely warm and friendly way. This IS what branding is all about.

PUBLIC SERVICE

Art From the Streets Raises More Than $80K for Austin's Homeless

More than 1,500 Austin art buyers purchased 2,000 paintings from 100 homeless artists at the 13th Annual Art From the Streets Show and Sale in early November. Proceeds go directly to the artists, enabling them to pay for necessities such as food, clothing, medical care, and housing.

"The Show & Sale places a spotlight on the talents of Austin's homeless community, who are often seen in a negative light," said Bill Jeffers, volunteer co-director. "By drawing attention to their creativity and hard work, we're helping them improve their quality of life by generating financial resources that can help them get off the street."

The show's success was due in part to the pro-bono campaign produced by two dozen Ad Fed volunteers. Karen Ford, White Hat Creative, lead the team, producing a comprehensive Creative Brief and a follow-up "how-to" campaigns book for next year's team. Greg Barton, Dandy Idea, designed the postcard, flyer and poster with photography by Scott Van Osdol. Keith Dotson, TGSL, designed a fundraising calendar featuring homeless artists' paintings. More than $4,000 was raised for AFTS through calendar sales. Ginny's Printing and O-K Paper donated calendar printing and paper. Dotson also designed print ads for donated space and an "evergreen" program brochure with copywriting provided by Monica Sanchez, Hispanic Marketing Strategy.

The publicity campaign tied into an invitation-only screening of Layton Blaylock's Art From the Streets, A Documentary. Some 200 people attended the film premier at the Alamo Draft House. Robyn Beck, Elephant Productions designed the invitation. Blaylock worked with Elephant Productions and GSD&M to produce the TV PSA spot, which won a Gold ADDY when first aired in 2003. Carl Settles, Big Daddy's House of Sound, contributed the voice over and new music bed for the updated PSA.

Dana Marruffo, The Peters Group, Ray Fernandez, Communication Werks, freelance writer Cyndi Swender, and Linsey Krauss executed a successful media relations campaign, placing more than 20 print and web stories and 18 minutes of on-air publicity. Kristin Kreisel Woodcock, EnviroMedia, and Robbie Good, St. Edwards University, assisted with campaign strategy and design. Roberto Quiroga produced website updates.

NTSU graduate Michael Roberts lead the volunteer postering and guerilla/street marketing campaigns where volunteers and homeless artists passed out flyers alongside framed artwork. Volunteers included UT Texas Advertising Group President Stephanie Peterson and Volunteer Coordinator Tanya Maldanado, TAG members Abi Stallings, Yenipher Chung, Collin Guerrera, photographer Rebecca Davis, and Fritz Blaw, Motorblade Postering Service.
