Austin Ad Fed - Just Ad People
Letter from the President

Enlightened Self-Interest. Such a lovely little concept. It spins nicely into notions of Win/Win and a rising tide raising all boats. It's that "thousand points of light thing" George Herbert Bush cribbed from Chairman Mao. It's a good reason for volunteering with the Ad Fed.

Enlightened self-interest is the relentless but benevolent mechanism of the free market, described by Adam Smith in his 1776 Wealth of Nations. He posits that self-interest and The Invisible Hand of market forces inevitably lead to prosperity for all. It is we, the Rational Actors, who by choosing to serve ourselves, serve our fellows.

Forty years later Thomas Malthus posited the opposing view that, like lemmings, we'd breed till we ran out of room. The jury is still out on who was right.

But we need not concern ourselves with the Fate of Nations. We know enlightened self-interest works just fine right here in the Austin Ad Fed.

We know that those of you who get involved profit by making new friends, learning new skills, and earning the goodwill of potential clients. We know that your work profits our public service clients The SIMS Foundation, Hill Country Ride for AIDS, and Art From the Streets.

We see the results of your good work—expert speakers presenting innovative business models, marquee-name ADDY judges capable of appreciating and awarding your best work, and better-trained students graduating ready to build your business.

Enlightened self-interest at work. You win, we win.

Winning is easy. Just visit www.austinadfed.com and click the Get Involved button. Our volunteer coordinator will hook you up with the project of your choice.

Thanks for your good work and enlightened self-interest, you Rational Actors, you.

Art From the Streets Hosts 13th Annual Show and Sale

Art From The Streets, a volunteer-driven program providing a safe and encouraging environment for Austin's homeless to exhibit artistic skills, will hold its 13th Annual Art From the Streets Show and Sale, on Saturday and Sunday, November 5th and 6th, 2005 from 12:00pm to 5:00 p.m., at the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH), 500 East 7th Street. Original artwork starts at $30 with proceeds going directly to the exhibiting artists. A $3 suggested admission donation helps defray the cost of supplies and materials. Convenient parking is available at the northwest corner of East 7th Street and Neches.

The Show & Sale gives Austin's homeless community the opportunity to exhibit artistic skills, interact with the people of Austin, and raise funds to pay for necessities such as food, clothing and housing. At last year's event, over 1,400 people attended the show purchasing over 1,100 pieces of art from more than 80 different artists, generating nearly $60,000 in sales, admissions, and donations.

"The work from the homeless artists is truly creative and inspiring," said Bill Jeffers, volunteer co-director, Art From The Streets. "This year we are displaying more than 2,000 new pieces and hope to exceed last year's sales by $20,000. This will make a positive impact on the artist's lives. At the end of the day, that's what it's all about."

Art From the Streets, A Documentary: Interview with Filmmaker Layton Blaylock
By Maja Sommerlatte

When Layton Blaylock filmed the 2003 Gold ADDY winning Art From the Streets PSA TV spot, he unknowingly discovered his latest pet-project. "The program had all the makings for a good documentary. Homelessness and art, plus a grassroots organization of volunteers with a great project that benefits the community too," explained Blaylock. Since 1992, the bi-weekly AFTS classes have offered both an artistic outlet and the potential to earn money for homeless artists.

The feature length documentary, Art From the Streets, capitalizes on Blaylock's professional and creative talents. "I shot the film, produced and directed it through my production company Inferno Films. Choosing the subject matter of art is interesting in itself. With homeless artists doubly so," explained Blaylock.
