MAIP

Through the Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP), students work at real advertising agencies, take on real job responsibilities, and learn from real-world business situations and industry professionals. Students selected for the annual 10-week paid summer internship program, which runs from early June to mid-August, will hone their skills in one of several advertising disciplines.  Interested in learning more?  Click here!

Student Testimonials:

Sherina Nainani
Graduated May 2010

"I am so grateful to have been selected as a MAIP Finalist for Summer 2010. Through the program, I was able to intern in the account planning department at Deutsch Inc (Lowe & Partners Company). During my internship, I worked on Degree Men's deodorant and Country Crock Spread. In addition to this, our intern groups were given the opportunity to create our own creative campaign for Zipcar car sharing, which we were then able to present to the senior executives at Deutsch Inc.

MAIP has given me great exposure to the fast-paced, competitive world of advertising. Through this program, I was able to meet various executives from agencies, learn of the different disciplines in advertising, and of course, establish friendships with fellow MAIP interns in the fabulous city of New York! At the end of the program, MAIP plans a career fair for interns that would be interested in full-time careers with any of the MAIP host agencies. At the end of my MAIP internship, I received a full-time offer from DraftFCB New York on the Office of the National Drug Control Policy (Above the Influence & Anti-Drug Campaign) account. I highly recommend the MAIP program for students that are passionate about the advertising industry and want to have the opportunity to intern at highly-renowned agencies."

Kristina Truong
Expected graduation: May 2011

"This past summer, I had the opportunity to intern at MEC Global (Mediaedge:Cia) in New York City through the 4A’s Multicultural Advertising Intern Program. This was, by far, the best summer I’ve ever had. Through the help of MAIP, the culture at MEC, and the friends I met along the way, I have made some great memories! MAIP definitely gave me the chance to explore the different aspects in the advertising industry and gave me the chance to network and build contacts with advertising professionals. The best part about the internship was the fact that we had to attend seminars every Monday.

These seminars were held at some of the top advertising agencies in the world and they allowed me to be exposed to the different roles in an agency that weren’t media-related—account management, strategic planning, creative, etc. Not only that, but through the work experience at MEC, I learned more than what I could in the classroom. For the first time, I had hands-on experience with the media planning and buying process. Being assigned to the IKEA and Toys-R-Us accounts, I met an enormous amount of representatives at vendor meetings. These reps pitched to us and showed that they wanted our service and for the first time, I saw how important our role was—as a media planner and advertising professional. All in all, I developed great contacts, went to my first Yankees game, and had the chance to play golf at Chelsea Piers. The perks were awesome, but this honestly couldn’t have happened if it weren’t for MAIP!"

Huston-Tillotson AAF

2010 Student Competition Team

Huston-Tillotson University fielded its first team of students in the 2010 American Advertising Federation National Student Advertising Competition (AAF/NSAC). The students competed at the District 10 Conference held in April in Amarillo, with 17 other universities from the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. The State Farm client brief asked students to grow the 18-25 year old market for auto and renters’ insurance. Students from Huston-Tillotson prepared a 32-page plans book and made a 20-minute presentation to judges at the district competition.

Under the guidance of faculty member, Dr. Kathryn Davis, marketing students undertook the challenge to prepare a complete marketing/advertising campaign for State Farm Insurance. The presentation team consisted of Brittney Bradley, account executive, Matt Abadie, Gabriel Gibbons, Tinashe Kupenga-Maposa, Victor Rodriguez (see photo), and Jamal Carrington (not shown).

The Austin Ad Federation is a strong supporter of advertising education. The Ad Fed Board matched the dollar amount of Advertising Education Sponsorships that the students from Huston-Tillotson and Texas State sold to help raise money for their travel expenses and to defray the production costs of their competition materials. In addition, District 10 provided a 20% match of the sponsorship amounts that the students sold. The Board also provided help in purchasing a printer for the Huston-Tillotson students and GSD&M/Idea City provided three Adobe Suite software packages to help the students prepare the plans book and creative executions.

Students from Huston-Tillotson felt the AAF experience was the pinnacle of their college experience. They are looking forward to next year’s competition, featuring the client J.C. Penney.

Student Portfolio Critique

GSD&M/Idea City April 29th, 2011

The Austin Advertising Federation held its second Student Portfolio Critique on April 29, 2011 at GSD&M/Idea City. Work from 25 students from the University of Texas, Texas State University, St. Edwards University, and the Art Institute of Austin were evaluated by seven industry professionals from the areas of creative and design.

The professionals who volunteered their time were Luke Sullivan and Robert Lin from GSD&M/Idea City, Raul Garza from TKO Advertising, Shanteka Sigers and Craig Brimm from SandersWingo, Thom Gehring from GehringCo., and Shawn McCraw from McCraw Design. GSD&M/Idea City volunteered the space to hold the critique.

Students brought sample work that included print campaigns, collateral design, direct marketing, television, out of home, and internet. The feedback was very positive. Most students felt that they received a critique of their work that will help them prepare for their final academic critique, as well as how to professionally present their work when interviewing for a job.
